Abodah (A Yom Kippur Melody) by Ernest Bloch is a work for violin and piano composed in 1928, dedicated to the young Yehudi Menuhin after Bloch, deeply moved by the prodigy’s performance in San Francisco, decided to offer him this piece. Titled Abodah (worship of God), it draws inspiration from a traditional Ashkenazi melody, Vehakkohanim, sung during the Mussaf service of Yom Kippur. With an introduction and coda on the piano framing the expressive violin line, Abodah reflects Bloch’s admiration for Menuhin and their artistic bond. Premiered by Menuhin and Louis Persinger in Los Angeles in December 1928, it remains a poignant testament to their collaboration.
